清明，二十四节气之一，春季的第五个节气。便为清明。清明，乃天清地明之意。中国传统的清明节大约始于周代，已有两千五百多年的历史。
“Clear and Bright” or Qingming (Pure Brightness), is one of the twenty-four solar terms and the fifth solar term of spring. It refers to the heaven or sky is bright and Earth is clear or light green with new growth. The traditional Chinese festival of Qingming began in the Zhou Dynasty and has a history of over 2,500 years.
清明时，气清景明，万物皆显，因此得名。清明，既是节气，又是节日。节气的清明，是春耕春种的大好时机，清明前后适合种植各类植物；节日的清明，是民间寄放情感和慰劳自己的传统日子。到了清明，中国大部分地区的天气就不冷了，进入到春季。但此间的天气，南方与北方好似两重天，北方干燥少雨，南方湿润多雨。上海人在清明前后有吃青团的食俗,这种风俗可追溯到两千多年前的周朝，青团是糯米制品，不适合孩子们多吃。虽然不适合孩子多吃，但是可以通过绘画的方式画出一盘胖嘟嘟的青团。
The reference to ‘Clear and Bright’ and ‘Qi Qing Jing Ming’, come together in meaning so therefore ‘Clear and Bright’ or ‘Pure Brightness’ (Qingming) are both a solar term and festival name. ‘Clear and Bright’ as a solar term, reminds us that it is a good opportunity for spring plowing and planting. The festival of Qingming is a traditional day for people to express their feelings and comfort themselves from the loss of loved ones. Usually the weather in most parts of China is not cold and has become reflective of spring. However, the weather in the south and north are very different. The north is dry with very little rain, whereas the south is very damp and rainy. The Shanghainese also have the custom of eating Qingtuan before and after ‘Clear and Bright’. This custom can be traced back to the Zhou Dynasty, more than 2,000 years ago. It is made of glutinous rice and is not suitable for children to eat too much of this. Although children should not eat much of this dish, they can honor the tradition by creating an artistic plate of sweet green sticky rice ball using paint or clay.
