The World Is An Open Book—Recommended English Readings From ESZSers

Reading is the best way to broaden one’s horizon, enrich one’s knowledge and nourish one’s mind. Reading a good book in English not only reaps these triple benefits, but also helps to improve one’s overall English skills. This spring, the students of EFZS Junior High, together with the teachers, have mapped out and cultivated a unique ground for English reading. Let's go and take a look!

(The Martian by Andy Weir & Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling)

(A Street Cat Named Bob by James Bowen)

(The Trials of Apollo by Rick Riordan)

(Diary of A Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney)

    (Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling)

    (Matilda by Roald Dahl)

The books recommended by the EFZSers are characterized by their vibrant content and various subject matter; through them you can feel the warmth of the world, experience the 'worries' of growing up, and even take a trip into the wonderland of 'magic'! The vision and taste as reflected in the students’ choice of books are truly impressive; and this impression is even more strengthened by their fluency in English.

We've also invited one of the teachers to recommend 2 books that in his opinion are ideal English readings for teenagers, let’s check it!

(Tales from Shakespeare by Charles & Mary Lamb; Who was William Shakespeare by Celeste Mannis)

In addition to the two books mentioned in the video, the teachers have some extra recommendations in the following list:

Reading widely and deeply is the ultimate way to get a good command of English language. By widely, it is meant that one should read in a wide range of subjects—literature, history, philosophy, art and science, for example; by deeply, it is meant that one should ponder and wonder so as to digest and assimilate what is being read. As the great philosopher Zhu Xi said: "In reading, we must first become intimately familiar with the text so that its words seem to come from our own mouth; we should then continue to reflect on it so that its ideas seem to come from our own minds. Only then can there be real understanding.”

Open to the world, we seek excellence in harmony. Under the guidance of the school motto, with the wise words of past sages in mind, let’s embrace the world in the form of an open book!
